National Muslim advocacy organization denounces attack on Muslim students

-For Immediate Release- (Ottawa - October 9, 2013) The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM), a prominent Muslim advocacy organization, today condemned an assault this past Saturday evening on six Muslim youth in Kingston, Ontario which is being investigated as a hate crime by Kingston Police. According to a media report the victims - all Muslim - were chased down the street and attacked by four perpetrators, with one of the suspects brandishing a weapon. NCCM comments on new public opinion poll about Islam

-For Immediate Release- (Ottawa - October 3, 2013) The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) says that an opinion survey released today by Angus-Reid examining public sentiment towards Islam indicates more needs to be done to overcome misinformation about a faith  followed by over a million Canadians. The study's results closely mirror those from an earlier 2009 poll with one notable exception showing an 8% increase, from 46% to 54%, in unfavourable opinion about Islam across Canada and outside of Quebec - wherein Islam also remains the only faith viewed unfavourably by a majority of Canadians. NCCM at the Supreme Court of Canada in Harkat case

The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) is pleased to announce that the organization is an intervener in a major case - Mohamed Harkat v. Minister of Citizenship and Immigration et al - before the Supreme Court of Canada (SCC). In July 2013, the SCC granted the NCCM intervener status in the Harkat case, along with other interested parties. Interveners are allowed to submit written arguments as well present oral arguments to the Court during the case's hearing. The Harkat case involves the controversial "security certificate" system under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act which has been used in the past to detain several non-Ca...

-For Immediate Release- (Ottawa - September 26, 2013) The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) is calling on public officials to condemn an alleged assault on a Muslim girl by teenagers in St. Catharines, Ont. that happened earlier this month. According to recent media reports, a 17-year-old girl wearing a headscarf was assaulted and verbally taunted by three other female teens as she was leaving a mosque. Two of the young women have reportedly been charged with assault.
