Every day Alia Haleem she steps out the front door of her house, she knows she could be the target of a hate crime.
On most days, the Muslim mom of four says she feels prying eyes follow her through grocery store aisles in her hometown of Mississauga, Ont.
On bad days, her eight-year-old son watches as passersby taunt her, make passing remarks about her niqab, or even push her.
“Obviously it hurts you, you’re not made out of iron,” Haleem, who is also a computer engineer, told Global News.
“There are days you just come home and you feel sad. You can’t be just a normal person.”

Muslim leaders urge government to help protect mosques, schools

Some Muslim community leaders are urging the federal government to do more to help protect their mosques and schools amid an increase in hate crimes.
A Statistics Canada report last week showed hate crimes targeting Muslims rose by 60 per cent across the country in 2015.
“It’s quite concerning the number of reports that have been coming in,” said Amira Elghawaby, a spokesperson for the National Council of Canadian Muslims. “At our organization, we have definitely seen a spike just in the last week of people reporting to us.”

The number of hate crimes targeting members of Toronto’s Muslim community was on the rise in 2015, police say, despite a drop in the overall number of hate crimes reported that year in the Toronto area.
More than one-fifth of Canada’s 1,362 reported hate crimes in 2015 were in the Toronto area, where 295 incidents were reported to police, according to a Statistics Canada report released Tuesday. That number was down from 318 in 2014.
Nationally, the number of hate crimes rose five per cent, driven by an increase of incidents targeting Muslims from 99 to 159. Jews remained the most targeted ...
