400+ Canadian Organizations Call for Canada to Take Action on the Recent Atrocities that have Developed in Palestine

Dear Prime Minister Trudeau, The past few months have seen only increasing horror as the people of Gaza continue to suffer ethnic cleansing at the hands of Israeli forces in what the ICJ calls a “plausible genocide”. Over 30,000 Palestinians have died in Gaza since last October. Canadians of every race, religion, and creed throughout our country have been deeply affected by the loss of all innocent life, including the tens of thousands of civilians in Gaza who have fallen victim to the collective punishment imposed upon them by the Netanyahu government. Millions more are at risk of death due to indiscriminate bombardment, the targeting of ...

NCCM AND CCLA CONDEMN QUEBEC GOVERNMENT’S OPPRESSION OF CHILDREN’S RELIGIOUS RIGHTS

The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) and the Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA) strongly denounce the banning of most forms of prayer in Quebec schools. On April 5th, Quebec’s Minister of Education Bernard Drainville issued a directive banning schools from using classrooms (and other school facilities) for prayer, while allowing students to pray quietly and discreetly on their own. This directive is a significant shift from his original position in favor of multi-confessional prayer spaces. Prayer spaces in schools exist to accommodate students whose religious practices require a peaceful and safe space for prayers in order ...

FOR THE SIXTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE QUEBEC CITY MOSQUE SHOOTING, IT IS TIME TO REMEMBER AND ACT BY JOINING THE GREEN SQUARE CAMPAIGN

(January 27th, 2023)  Quebec City, Quebec — This Sunday, January 29th, marks the second annual “National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action against Islamophobia.”   On that day, we will remember again. We will remember that action starts with remembrance. The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) calls on Canadians of all backgrounds to remember the fallen and reflect on the road ahead to combat hate.   Six years ago, an Islamophobic attack took the lives of six worshippers in Quebec City’s Islamic Cultural Centre. Some perished because they tried to stop the attacker from taking more lives....

SUPREME COURT OF CANADA DECISION ON QUEBEC CITY MOSQUE SHOOTER’S SENTENCE

(Montreal - May 27, 2022)  The Supreme Court of Canada’s decision on Friday to keep Quebec City mosque gunman Alexander Bissonnette’s parole ineligibility period to 25 years will be received with difficulty by many, particularly for those in the community he ravaged on the night of January 29th, 2017. The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) had intervener status in this case.  Bissonnette had pled guilty to murdering six Muslim worshippers at Quebec City’s Islamic Cultural Centre that night, while injuring and maiming 19 others.   Friday’s decision rejects an appeal by the Crown to have Bissonnette serve life in prison ...

NCCM WELCOMES NEWS THAT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WILL INTERVENE IN THE LEGAL CHALLENGE AGAINST QUEBEC’S BILL 21 IF IT REACHES THE SUPREME COURT

(Montréal - May 25, 2022)  In 2019, the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) and the Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA), with the lead plaintiff Ichrak Nourel Hak, began a court challenge against the Quebec Act respecting the laicity of the State, better known as Bill 21. Bill 21 bars certain civil servants—including prosecutors, police officers, and teachers —from wearing religious symbols (like hijabs, turbans, kippahs, and more) at work in Quebec.  Bill 21 is a discriminatory piece of legislation that targets marginalized communities by facilitating second class citizenship. NCCM has been against it from the very start ...
