Thank Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie for standing firm against Islamophobia

The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM), a national Muslim civil liberties & advocacy organization, is calling on supporters and fellow Canadians to immediately write to Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie to thank her for taking a principled stand against Islamophobia.

Mayor Bonnie Crombie recently stood firm against a concerted campaign mounted by an individual who employed anti-Muslim language in advocating that the city block zoning permission to the Meadowvale Islamic Centre.

Mayor Crombie showed firm leadership in challenging his discriminatory views. At one point, she told the anti-Muslim campaigner during the committee hearing that “he should be ashamed of himself” for fear mongering against the local Muslim community.

The city’s planning committee went on to approve the mosque in a vote that was 11-1.

Some residents have since called on the Mayor to apologize for her criticism of the individual’s negative statements. She is refusing to do so, calling his actions “unCanadian”.
