NCCM welcomes government’s approach to national security policy
(Ottawa – January 21, 2016) The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM), a prominent civil liberties and advocacy organization, welcomes statements today by federal Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale outlining the government’s approach to addressing national security policy.
In a CBC radio interview, the Public Safety minister outlined a three-pronged approach to addressing national security, which includes amending the Anti-terrorism Act, 2015, strengthening oversight of security agencies and expanding community outreach for preventing radicalization to criminal violence. The Minister also referred to holding meaningful consultations with community groups and experts.
« We welcome the federal government’s indicated approach. The new government is moving in the right direction by affirming its intention to consult with communities to address the concerns of Canadians regarding national security legislation and policy,” says NCCM Executive Director Ihsaan Gardee.
« The NCCM has long been calling for community-based solutions as a major component to ensuring national security. Canadian Muslims have always been committed to safeguarding Canada. However, historically Canadian Muslim communities have paid a disproportionate price because of harmful mistakes in security policy. We are hopeful that with strengthened and robust oversight over security powers, a proper balance can be struck between protecting the civil liberties of Canadians and national security concerns,” adds Gardee.
The NCCM looks forward to consulting with the federal government on national security issues.
The NCCM is an independent, non-partisan, and non-profit grassroots advocacy organization. It is a leading voice for Muslim civic engagement and the promotion of human rights.
