Position: Legal Affairs Coordinator

Location: Ottawa, Montreal, GTA

Start date: Immediate

Expected hours of work: Full-time.

Application deadline: Open until filled.

Compensation: Commensurate with experience.

Key Duties:

The Legal Affairs Coordinator will bring their skills and talents to supporting NCCM’s legal advocacy on issues related to Islamophobia, hate and discrimination against Muslims in Canada.

The Role:

The NCCM is recruiting for a full-time Human Rights Legal Assistant who demonstrates exceptional attention to detail.

The ideal candidate must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and extensive experience and comfort with organizing their time and the file.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducting intake meetings with clients and reporting to lawyers
  • Preparing meeting notes
  • Serving and filing documents with the court and the administrative tribunals
  • Regularly communicating with clients and lawyers
  • Prepare case law research to support legal and policy files
  • Drafting, editing, formatting, and proofreading routine correspondence, letters and other related documents;
  • Other duties, as assigned

Qualifications

  • Good knowledge of legal procedures, statutes, and regulations
  • Legal assistant or Law Clerk diploma
  • Experience in a legal clinic, law firm, advocacy organization or similar environment
  • Familiarity with rules of procedure regarding federal, provincial and, ideally, supreme court
  • Flexibility to adapt to different tasks
  • Excellent multi-tasking skills
  • Accurate proofreading skills to edit and format documents
  • Works well independently and in a team and follows instructions with minimal supervision
  • Takes initiative, is goal-oriented, and is a problem-solver
  • Uses good judgment and is resourceful
  • Ability to communicate in a professional manner, both verbally and in writing, with clients, lawyers, and team members
  • Willingness to learn and contribute to the team
  • Work collaboratively in a workplace with dignity and respect
  • Proficient computer skills

Training & Work Experience:

  • Minimum of a legal assistant diploma or equivalent combination of work experience and education
  • Minimum of 1 year experience as a Human Rights Legal Assistant or Paralegal.

Other:

  • Must be able to work in the office and remotely, based on department needs
  • French and English bilingualism is a strong asset
