We’re a Family. It’s Time To Protect Our Families.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “The best of you are the best to their families”.

At a time when we are all at home with our families, we know that our mandate is to protect our families and our communities – our elderly, our sick, our children.

It is no exaggeration to say that the COVID-19 pandemic is a devastating catastrophe.

NCCM is operating nationwide to ensure the burdens of the COVID-19 outbreak are eased on our shared family. We are also monitoring the response of our governments to make sure that minorities are not targeted during this time, and while civil liberties are being impacted, we ensure that the impacts of those impositions are not overreaching.

Our focus is on:

  1. Defending our charitable institutions
  2. Protecting civil liberties
  3. Social media regulation
  4. Responding to the immediate needs of the most vulnerable

1. DEFENDING OUR CHARITABLE INSTITUTIONS

 

NCCM knows that at this time, our charitable institutions are at risk.

Mosques and aid organizations across Canada that support the most vulnerable are facing challenges on both ends. On one end, they aren’t able to host fundraising events and have had to close their physical spaces. On the other end, the demand on their services has increased as folks lose their jobs, or face increased threats of domestic violence and homelessness.

If you want your local mosque, or your local aid organizations to remain open, the time to act is now.

We’re asking the Government of Canada to stand for our charitable sector. See our open letter for our recommendations.

2. CIVIL LIBERTIES

At a time when the Government of Canada and numerous provinces invoke emergency powers, NCCM is watching carefully to ensure that minorities are not disproportionately affected.

That means watching to ensure that legislation similar to what has been tabled in the UK, which aims at giving the power to government to mandate things like forced cremation to every citizen that passes away does not become law in Canada.

That means making sure that we stand for the rights of Canadians to return to Canada, while ensuring that they abide by the proper quarantine procedures.

3. SOCIAL MEDIA REGULATION

In the last few weeks, the problem with social media in this country has become more and more apparent.

On one hand, we see an incredible amount of disinformation spreading about coronavirus – whether on WhatsApp or Facebook, conspiracy theories or homemade recipes have a deleterious impact on being able to do something to stop the spread of a major public health threat.

On the other hand, we see hate fueled posts directed at racialized communities, including members of the Canadian Chinese community. But such hate targets all communities, including the Canadian Muslim community; in the past few weeks, there have been numerous viral conspiracy-theory posts on how Muslims are somehow responsible for spreading the coronavirus.

Therefore, NCCM’s work on social media regulation calling for immediate action to regulate social media companies through clear, thoughtful, well-researched and effective legislation becomes even more critical. Learn more here.

4. CANADIAN MUSLIM RESPONSE NETWORK

The Canadian Muslim Response Network (CMRN), a coalition of some of Canada’s leading Muslim civil society organizations is launching a campaign to support those who are affected by the COVID-19 crisis. NCCM is proud to be a part of the coalition.

The campaign is designed to especially help those who may be more vulnerable to the COVID-19 virus and to the effects of self-isolation.

The nationwide campaign launched in the Greater Toronto Area on March 16th, 2020.
